Rust-Free Shower Materials: Plastic, Brass, Glass & More

What material won’t rust in a shower?

If you want something that won’t rust in a shower, the most reliable choices are plastic, silicone, glass, ceramic, and solid brass. These materials don’t contain iron, so they can’t form rust (iron oxide) the way typical steel does. For shower storage, accessories made from plastic or silicone are often the simplest “set it and forget it” option because they tolerate constant splashes without needing special care.

Best rust-proof materials for shower organizers and hardware

Plastic (ABS, polypropylene) won’t rust and is common in shower caddies, shelves, hooks, and dispensers. It’s lightweight and easy to wipe down, but can scratch or fade over time.

Silicone also won’t rust and is frequently used for corner grips, squeegees, and non-slip holders. It stays stable in humid environments and is easy to rinse clean.

Glass and ceramic won’t rust either, making them great for dishes, soap trays, and decorative containers. The tradeoff is breakability, so they’re better for lower-traffic spots.

Solid brass doesn’t rust and is a strong pick for screws, fittings, and premium bathroom hardware. It can tarnish or develop a patina, but that’s different from rust and usually doesn’t compromise strength.

What about “stainless” and coated metals?

Stainless steel is rust-resistant, not rust-proof. Quality grades (like 304) hold up well in showers, but cheap stainless or constant exposure to harsh cleaners can still lead to corrosion. Aluminum doesn’t rust either, though it can oxidize (a dulling film) and may pit over time in salty or very wet conditions. Coated steel can work, but once the coating chips, rust can start underneath.

FAQ

How do you keep a shower caddy from rusting?

Choose plastic, solid brass, or high-quality stainless steel, and avoid chipped coatings. After showers, reduce standing water by shaking off the caddy and improving ventilation to dry the area faster.
